Republic is a city in the American state of Missouri’s Christian and Greene counties. There were 18,750 people living in the city as of the 2020 Census. With a population of 16,938 in 2019, it was the second-largest city in Missouri’s Greene County. Additionally, it ranks as the fourth-largest city in the Springfield, Missouri, MSA.

Early inhabitants of Little York in southwest Greene County settled there. Little York was not on the route when the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad constructed a line through the region in the early 1870s. The community was relocated two miles away to Brookline, which was near the train line.

Just four miles southwest of Brookline, another group of migrants made the decision to establish themselves at another location along the railroad. Republic, the name by which this village eventually came to be known, was incorporated in 1871[7]. Although the railroad did pass through Republic, there was not a switch or depot there at first. The money to erect a depot in the city was raised through a public subscription of $1000. The building of the depot is credited with further expansion.

Following a referendum by the citizens of both communities, Republic and Brookline merged in 2005 as permitted by Missouri State law, with Republic taking over all facets of city administration. Although Brookline was supposed to keep its own character, Republic’s city limit signs have already replaced Brookline’s. However, as stated in the Intergovernmental Agreement’s Section I (b):

“Name of Consolidated Municipality – The name of the consolidated municipality must be “City of Republic.” The City will erect signage reading “Village of Brookline” at the current Village corporate limits in order to assist retain the Village’s identity. When erected in State right-of-way, signage placement is subject to State sign laws. The Brookline Station Post Office’s history and operation will be preserved with the assistance of the City of Republic and the USPS.

Despite the absence of the Village of Brookline as a stand-alone, incorporated community, the post office and related ZIP Code of 65619 are still in use. Additionally, Brookline is still shown as a station location on BNSF Railway’s network map and system timetables.
