Farmers who built their farms along the forested streams close to modern-day Nixa were the first to occupy the area. It was a half-day trip with a team of horses from Springfield, thus the location quickly became a crossroads. It served as a convenient rest area for Teamsters transporting freight between Springfield and Arkansas. Faughts was the name given to the community. Nicholas A. Inman, a blacksmith from Tennessee who settled there early, opened a shop in 1852. A town meeting was conducted to choose a name for the new settlement before the post office opened. It was suggested that the town be named after him in honor of his many years of dedication to the neighborhood. The village was “nothing but a crossroads,” thus “nix” was another idea.
